About
Rattributes was created on September 26th, 2008, two weeks before bringing rats into my home. The main purpose of this site is to house pictures and stories about my rats, and to give me a place to keep track of any medical issues that may arise. I’m pretty awful at keeping track of notebooks and other material items, so having the date of everything on the web should prove invaluable to me when I need to look back and remember something that happened.
The second function of this site is as a rat hammock pattern / rat hammock tutorial site. Me and my obsessive nature insist on doing everything to extremes and I found solace in my lack of rats (while waiting for them to be old enough to bring home) by sewing hammocks for them. I am an extremely amateur seamstress, so if I can manage to make beautiful hammocks then anyone can!
It seems, however, that many people are daunted by the prospect and have no idea where to start. It is also difficult to find tutorials and patterns online. I decided to save people the trouble of figuring out patterns on their own (as I’m sure having no guidelines makes it even more daunting to many) and post my own set of tutorials.
The tutorial page is ever-growing and I hope that it helps at least a few people to make comfy and pretty beds for their rats. Please don’t hesitate to contact me (e-mail or with a comment on the page) if you have any questions about any of my tutorials.
Hi
just wanted to say thanks for the tutorials they are fab!
i have just made my first triangle and your instructions made it so easy!
i am experimenting with not stitching up the hole in the last stage but turning that into the ‘door’ im guessing the shape wont be as stable but it may save 5 mins as my hand sewing isnt great, i will let you know what happens!
thanks again for the great tuts!
Yay, I’m glad you were able to make a triangle! I wouldn’t worry too much about your modification weakening the structure. Triangles and cubes tend to bow anyway, so it probably wouldn’t make much of a noticeable difference.
I really liked this post. Can I copy it to my site? Thank you in advance.
Ariana - If you’d like to, sure.
Your tutorials are spectacular. I just got my very manly sewing machine for christmas, and after watching your slip-stitch video and reading your hammock tutorial. I feel like I might be able to make something that doesn’t have one of my fingers as an accessory. Thanks!
Leonard — It always makes me so happy to hear that people are getting use out of my tutorials. I’m sure that your manly sewing machine and you are going to tailor some amazing hammocks for your ratties with only the appropriate accessories ^_^ Feel free to contact me if you run into any trouble with any of the tutorials, or even just have general sewing questions! I know I don’t update the blog very much any more, but I do try to respond to e-mails promptly.
Thanks so much for your incredible tutorials. Thanks to you my ratties have some incredible hammocks. Any plans to add new tutorials?
Amanda — thank you for commenting! It makes my day to hear that someone is using them!
Unfortunately, at this point I do not think I will be posting any new tutorials.
